Cyril of Jerusalem, Lecture 1

Cyril of Jerusalem

Lecture 1

Wash you, make you clean; put away your iniquities from your souls, from before my eyes….” — Isaiah 1:16

Summary: Baptism is a washing away of sins by the Spirit, based on sincere confession.

Preview: 1.  Joy over sinners that repent; wash.  2.  Be free from slavery to sin; put off the old man; come for the Seal; be begotten by the Spirit in baptism.  3.  Do not tempt God’s grace; keep free from hypocrisy: for God searches the hearts.  Develop a disposition akin to the Seal.  4.  You are receiving s spiritual shield, an invisible Paradise, a new name.  You were a Catechumen, now you will be a Believer; grafted from wild to good, from sin to righteousness, from pollution to purity; partake of the vine; abide in the vine; bear fruit.  5.  Confess your deeds, receiving heavenly treasure; be exorcised, be assiduous, remember the teachings, seal them in memory; blot out earthly care; forsake the world; trust that which comes; be still, guard your tongue; the Holy Spirit is bestowed according to faith with works.  6.  Forgive; attend; be watered and tended; wrestle, nourish; be presented to the Father.
