Cyril of Jerusalem, Lecture 13, Part C

Cyril of Jerusalem

Lecture 13, Part C

Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? ... He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter….” — Isaiah 53:1,7

Summary: St Cyril finishes his discussion of types and figures of the Cross; he continues with weightier demonstrations of proofs for the Cross and for the Crucifixion, using quotes that are more easily understood.  He shows why we must not flinch before opposition.  Remember me when You come in Your kingdom.”

Preview:  21.  “The beginning of signs under Moses was blood and water; and the last of all Jesus’ signs was the same.  First, Moses changed the river into blood; and Jesus at the last gave forth from His side water with blood.”  “Again it is to be understood in another way; the blood for the Jews, and the water for the Christians….”  “Our fathers who have written comments have given another reason … Baptism … by means of water; … a second to holy martyrs … through their own blood.”  For [Eve] who was formed from [Adam’s] side; “Jesus who came to bestow the grace of pardon on men and women alike, was pierced in the side….”  22.  These are enough for now.  “Yet, we never can be tired of hearing concerning the crowning of our Lord.”  “Let none be weary; take your armor against the adversaries in the cause of the Cross itself; set up the faith of the Cross as a trophy against the gainsayers.”  23.  “You see this spot of Golgotha!  See that you recant not in time of persecution.  Rejoice not in the Cross in time of peace only, but hold fast the same faith in time of persecution also….”  Think not of the Crucified as of a mere man; He is the Head of all principality and power.  That Head which was crucified is the Head of all power, and has for His Head the Father; for the Head of the man is Christ, and the Head of Christ is God.”[i]  24.  “It was cold … [Christ] was crucified at the third hour;” there was darkness between the sixth and ninth hours; then light again.  It shall come to pass in that day, that there shall not be light, and there shall be cold and frost one day.”[ii]  25.  Yet, at what hour?  And it shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord God, that the sun shall go down at noon and the light shall grow dark over the earth in the day.  And I will turn your feasts into mourning, … And I will make Him as the mourning of an Only Son, and those with Him as a day of anguish.”[iii]  26.  Moreover, “They parted My garments among them, and upon My vesture they did cast lots.”[iv]  27.  “Before Pilate, He was clothed in red [or purple].”[v]  Who is this that comes from Edom?  The redness of His garments is from Bosor.”[vi]  28.  “He stretched out His hands on the Cross, that He might embrace the ends of the world.”  You have wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.”[vii]  “Having died, sin might die with it, and we might rise again in righteousness.  For since by one man came death, by One Man came also life.”[viii]  For remember what He said, I have power to lay down My life, and I have power to take it again.”[ix]  29.  “But though He endured these things … yet the people returned Him an evil….”  They gave Me also gall for My meat, and in My thirst, they gave Me vinegar to drink.”[x]  I waited, he says, that it should bring forth grapes; I thirsted that it should give wine; but it brought forth thorns.”[xi]  So, “Let the Prophets speak[xii]: for there were Prophets also in the early Church.  30.  “Concerning the robbers who were crucified with Him, it is written, And He was numbered with the transgressors.”[xiii]  When they looked on Me, they shook their heads.”[xiv]  Remember me [not] now, but, when You come in Your kingdom.”[xv]

[v] κόκκινος: from an insect – crimson with a tinge of blue, red, scarlet with a tinge of orange: Matthew 13:31; 17:20; 27:28; Mark 4:31; Luke 13:19; 17:16; John 12:24; 1 Corinthians 15:37; Hebrews 9:19; Revelation 17:3, 4; 18:12, 16
πορφύρα or πορφύρεος: from a shell-fish – bright crimson; bright purple (much brighter, lighter, and redder than a modern purple: Mark 15:17, 20; Luke 16:19; John 19:2, 5; Acts 16:14; Revelation 17:4; 18:12, 16
These appear to be two similar colors, difficult to distinguish in some light conditions, and possibly woven together to form designs, patterns, or stripes in garments.  There description may also be somewhat vernacular; or loosely or popularly applied; or otherwise limited by the writer’s knowledge of the manufacturing process.  Other similar dyes were also used, depending on availability and cost; since this garment was provided by soldiers it is unlikely that the best dye, costing more than gold, was used.

Cyril of Jerusalem, Lecture 13, Part B

Cyril of Jerusalem

Lecture 13, Part B

Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? ... He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter….” — Isaiah 53:1,7

Summary: St Cyril continues the demonstration of proofs for the Cross and for the Crucifixion with numerous quotes, types, and figures.

Some of these references seem obscure to us in our enlightened age; we must remember that St. Cyril is much closer to the writing of Luke 24 than we are: thus, he possibly retains messages of Christ, which we, in our modern wisdom, have lightly pushed aside.  It is not my place to say that St. Cyril has erred, nor is it anyone else's.

Preview:  11.  What is “the exact solution of this seeming discrepancy”: for Zechariah has foundry (or furnace), while Matthew has potter:[i] for the coins went from temple floor somewhere.  St. Cyril points out that potters had foundries or furnaces to fire the clay: so, both are true.  12.  They bound Jesus, and brought Him into the hall of the High-priest.”  Woe unto their soul, for they have taken evil counsel against themselves, saying, Let us bind the Just, for He is troublesome to us.”[ii]  The Lord Himself will come into judgment with the ancients of His people, and with the princes thereof….”[iii]  13.  I gave My back to the scourges; and My cheeks to smitings; and My face I turned not away from the shame of spittings.”[iv]  For, “He that loves his life shall lose it.”[v]  14.  And having bound Him, they led Him away as a present to the king[vi] of Jarim.”[vii]  15.  Against whom have you opened your mouth, and against whom have you let loose your tongue?”[viii]  Mine heritage became unto Me as a lion in the forest; it gave its voice against Me; therefore have I hated it.”[ix]  16.  And I became as a man that hears not; and in whose mouth are no reproofs; and again, But I was as a deaf man and heard not; and as a dumb man that opens not his mouth.”[x]  17.  When they looked on Me, they shook their heads.”[xi]  Go forth, O you daughters of Jerusalem, and look upon King Solomon in the crown wherewith His mother crowned Him.”[xii]  18.  Cursed is the ground in your labors; thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you.”[xiii]  19.  “[Concerning] Paradise, I am truly astonished at the truth of the types.  In Paradise was the Fall, and in a Garden was our Salvation.  From the Tree came sin, and until the Tree sin lasted.  In the evening, when the Lord walked in the Garden, they hid themselves.”[xiv]  I was like a harmless lamb led to be slaughtered; did I not know it?”[xv]  They devised against Me a wicked device….”[xvi]  “And that it was Life, which hung on the Cross, Moses says, weeping, And your life shall be hanging before your eyes; and you shall be afraid day and night, and you shall not trust your life.”[xvii]  20.  The brazen serpent is also a type of the Crucifixion; as also was the wood that sweetened the water [of Marah].

Cyril of Jerusalem, Lecture 13, Part A

Cyril of Jerusalem

Lecture 13, Part A

Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? ... He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter….” — Isaiah 53:1,7

Summary: The pinnacle of Christ’s glorious deeds is the Cross, by which healing, resurrection, feeding, and freedom were brought to all mankind: so, we glory in the Cross of Christ: stumbling-block to Jews; foolishness to Gentiles; salvation to us in all verity: we fear not to declare it because of the Resurrection.  Jesus went to the Cross sinlessly, willingly: for which there are many proofs from the Prophets.

Preview:  1.  “Every deed of Christ is” glorious; But God forbid that I should glory, save in the Cross of Christ”; this is the supreme glory of the Church.  The healing of one blind from birth, the raising of Lazarus, the feeding of thousands, the loosing of the woman bound by Satan are all glorious; but, the healing of the worlds blindness; the raising, feeding, and loosing of all; this is supremely glorious: for the Cross led ignorance to light, loosed all, and ransomed all mankind.  2.  “Wonder not that the whole world was ransomed: for [Christ is] no mere man”; yet, Adam brought sin and death on the whole world; and Phinehas staved the wrath of God by killing the evil-doers[i]: but, Christ is greater than either, bringing the fruit of life, giving Himself for God’s wrath.[ii]  3.  So, let us glory in the Cross; stumbling-block to Jews; foolishness to Gentiles; salvation to us:[iii] for the Lamb of God is greater than the lamb sacrificed by Moses.  Many were crucified; only One scared devils.  Many died for their own sins; only One died for the sins of others: “for He did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth.”[iv]  And Pilate finds no fault in Jesus.[v]  Even a robber finds Him innocent.[vi]  4.  Jesus then really suffered for all men; for the Cross was no illusion, otherwise our redemption is an illusion also.  His death was not a mere show, for then is our salvation also fabulous[vii].”  “Now that the Resurrection has followed the Cross, I am not ashamed to declare it.”  5.  Like fleshly men, “He was crucified,” but, not alike in their sins: He was not covetous, had no concupiscence[viii], not a smiter; no despiser of the Law, the fulfiller of the Law; no reviler of prophets, the One proclaimed by all prophets; no defrauder, He worked for free.  “[He] did no sin.”[ix]  “[He] came to His passion … willingly.”[x]  6.  Proof of His willingness: “He spoke before of His passion”, He did not resist Judas who plotted His death, He declared that the Cross was His Glory, He professed power to lay down His life.  7.  “But the Jews contradict this , ever ready, as they are, to cavil, and backward to believe; so that for this cause the Prophet just now read says, Lord, who has believed our report?[xi]  Persians believe , and Hebrews believe not….”  “For he signifies that the grace of life is no longer to dwell in Israel, but among the Gentiles.  8.  We should seek these testimonies among the Prophets concerning: Judas, His pierced side, His crucifixion in a garden, sold for thirty pieces, given vinegar to drink, laid in a rock, sealed by a stone, crucified with robbers, buried, raised.  “For our speech and our preaching is not in persuasive words of man's wisdom.”[xii]  “Listen now to a few of the more important [of these testimonies].”  And “if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who gives….”[xiii]  9.  “I begin from whence the Passion began.  Judas was the traitor, and he came against Him … plotting war.  … the Psalmist says, My friends and My neighbors drew near against Me, and stood.[xiv]  And again, Their words were softer than oil, yet be they spears.[xv]  Hail, Master.”  are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?[xvi]  O God, pass not over My praise in silence; for the mouth of the wicked, and the mouth of the deceitful, are opened against Me; they have spoken against Me with a treacherous tongue, they have compassed Me about also with words of hatred.[xvii]  They returned at evening, and hungered like dogs, and encompassed the city.”[xviii]  10.  And I will say to them, If it be good in your sight, give me my price, or refuse.  And they weighed for My price thirty pieces of silver.  And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them into the house of the Lord, into the foundry.”[xix]

[i] Numbers 25:6-11

[ii] How is this not guilt: for wrath surely indicates a judgment by God that Adam, with all mankind is guilty.  So, the process seems to stand: sin-guilt-death.  Nor can we possibly be innocent in Adam’s sin.  If God has wrath against man; then man necessarily has guilt before God.

[viii] St. Cyril’s definition of concupiscence may differ somewhat from our custom: for he applies it directly to adultery (lust after women), not to a general tendency to sin (lust after anything).
